Microsoft Dynamics consultants: how to choose and what to pay

A Microsoft Dynamics consultant is a specialist in one slice of the Dynamics 365 family: Business Central, the finance and operations apps, or Customer Engagement.

A Microsoft Dynamics consultant is a specialist in one slice of the Dynamics 365 family: Business Central, the finance and operations apps, or Customer Engagement. As of October 2026, US recruiter benchmarks put a mid-level finance and operations functional contractor at USD 118 an hour, and Business Central benchmarks put a mid-level functional contractor at USD 100 an hour. Those figures are pay to the person, blending W2 and 1099 or corp-to-corp arrangements. A partner invoice is a separate number the salary guides do not publish. Microsoft points smaller or overwhelmed teams to Business Central, and a delivery team is for a first implementation that crosses apps.

Finance and operations work pays more and asks for a different deployment record than Business Central. Across Microsoft's guidance, finance and operations apps means Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management, Commerce, Human Resources, and Project Operations. A freelancer can cover a bounded workstream at the hourly bands below. A first implementation that crosses apps needs a firm that can sit through Microsoft's reviews. An employee, even at a senior finance and operations base of USD 145,000 or more, is one seat. The first go-live is a larger job than that seat.

Which Dynamics 365 app the consultant must already know

Microsoft's implementation guide is written for medium-sized and larger organizations. The same page points startups, small businesses, or teams overwhelmed by complexity toward Dynamics 365 Business Central. If your company is a single-entity distributor or a professional firm under about 100 people, that steer is the first filter on the résumé. A consultant who has only delivered Finance for a multi-country manufacturer is the wrong lead for a two-warehouse Business Central rollout, and the reverse is also true.

One 2026 implementation roundup states the split directly: "The partner that excels at implementing Dynamics 365 Sales for a regional bank is rarely the same partner you want implementing Finance & Operations for a global manufacturer." The practical test is the last three go-lives, named by product, industry, and headcount.

Use this split when you write the requisition:

  1. Business Central: finance, inventory, light manufacturing, and projects for a smaller company. US contract pay for a functional consultant, as of October 2026, runs USD 65 an hour junior, USD 100 mid, and USD 140 or more senior.
  2. Finance and operations apps: Finance, Supply Chain Management, Commerce, Human Resources, and Project Operations. Mid-level functional contract pay in the US is USD 118 an hour on the same date.
  3. Customer Engagement: Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, and the related customer-insight apps. Experienced client-facing contract pay in a 2025 US guide updated into 2026 is USD 110 to USD 160 an hour for a senior functional consultant or lead.

If you are still choosing among those apps, start from Dynamics 365 implementation and narrow the product before you narrow the people. For a single-entity wholesale or distribution business, Business Central implementation is the usual first system, with finance and operations apps reserved for a later, larger operating model. Detail on hiring a Business Central specialist sits in our guide on how to hire a Business Central consultant.

What US buyers pay a Dynamics 365 consultant

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish a Dynamics 365 occupation. Its May 2025 median for management analysts, a broader consulting job, was USD 101,860 a year, or USD 48.97 an hour. Self-employed people in that occupation are paid by the hour or by the project. That median is not a Dynamics consultant rate. Use the specialist guides below, and read them as pay to the person.

Conspicuous built its finance and operations bands from placements and candidate registrations gathered through 2024 to 2026. DynamicsFocus aimed its Customer Engagement ranges at experienced client-facing consultants, typically 5 or more years and often 10 to 25, with multiple go-lives. The Conspicuous rows below are national-average US base salaries as of October 2026, and on those rows New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago typically add a 10 to 20 percent premium. Bonuses and benefits are extra.

  • Finance and operations functional (Entry or junior base: USD 75,000 (0 to 2 years) · Mid base: USD 108,000 (3 to 5 years) · Senior base: USD 145,000 or more (6 or more years, or team lead))
  • Finance and operations solution architect (Entry or junior base: USD 120,000 · Mid base: USD 158,000 · Senior base: USD 200,000 or more)
  • Business Central functional (Entry or junior base: USD 65,000 · Mid base: USD 92,000 · Senior base: USD 125,000 or more)
  • Business Central solution architect (Entry or junior base: USD 100,000 · Mid base: USD 130,000 · Senior base: USD 170,000 or more)
  • Customer Engagement senior functional or subject-matter expert (Senior base: USD 140,000 to USD 190,000 (experienced))
  • Customer Engagement lead (Senior base: USD 160,000 to USD 210,000)
  • Customer Engagement solution architect (Senior base: USD 170,000 to USD 230,000)

Sources: Conspicuous 2026 US finance and operations salary guide, Conspicuous 2026 US Business Central salary guide, and DynamicsFocus 2025 US salary guide, Customer Engagement, figures as of October 2026. Customer Engagement rows are target ranges for experienced hires, so they do not sit on the same entry, mid, and senior grid or take the metro premium.

A 10 percent metro premium on the USD 108,000 mid-level finance and operations base is USD 10,800, which lands at USD 118,800. A 20 percent premium is USD 21,600, which lands at USD 129,600. That is still base pay. It is the cost of employing someone in a coastal or large-metro market, before bonus.

Contract hourly benchmarks, again pay to the person as of October 2026:

  • Finance and operations functional (Junior: USD 78 · Mid: USD 118 · Senior: USD 160 or more)
  • Finance and operations solution architect (Junior: USD 118 · Mid: USD 162 · Senior: USD 210 or more)
  • Business Central functional (Junior: USD 65 · Mid: USD 100 · Senior: USD 140 or more)
  • Business Central solution architect (Junior: USD 100 · Mid: USD 140 · Senior: USD 185 or more)

On the finance and operations and Business Central guides, W2 rates are typically 15 to 20 percent lower than 1099 or corp-to-corp rates. The hourly columns are a blend of those arrangements, so you cannot treat USD 118 as a pure 1099 rate or shave 15 percent off it and call the result a published W2 rate. Ask the person which arrangement the quote uses.

Experienced Customer Engagement contract ranges, same DynamicsFocus guide:

  • Senior functional consultant, subject-matter expert, or lead: USD 110 to USD 160
  • Solution architect or technical architect: USD 140 to USD 220
  • Premium work: go-live rescue, high travel, or a niche skill: USD 180 to USD 250 or more

Why the invoice is higher than these tables

These PDFs stop at what the specialist is paid. A partner invoice adds delivery management, a bench, and margin. No public figure in these guides states that markup, so do not apply a guessed multiple. Budget the person, then require a project quote with its own lines for configuration, data migration, integrations, training, and the weeks after go-live. If a proposal only restates a blended hourly rate near USD 118, you still do not know the project fee.

Why a European day rate is the wrong US benchmark

Dynamics Hub's editorial model, a Western Europe baseline in euros per day, lists EUR 780 per day for a finance consultant with 10 or more years, as of October 2026. The same editorial approach lists EUR 690 per day for a Business Central consultant with 10 or more years. On the finance rate page, community samples of eight consultants each averaged EUR 481 per day for Finance (range EUR 184 to EUR 1,080) and EUR 351 per day for Business Central (range EUR 184 to EUR 702). Those are asking rates in a European model with single-digit samples. They are not US invoice rates.

What the same roles cost in Canada

Keep Canadian bands in Canadian dollars. Do not convert them from the US tables. Conspicuous Canada benchmarks, as of October 2026; the finance and operations rows are national averages:

  • Finance and operations functional base (Entry or junior: CAD 80,000 · Mid: CAD 115,000 · Senior: CAD 152,000 or more)
  • Finance and operations functional, per hour (Entry or junior: CAD 82 · Mid: CAD 125 · Senior: CAD 168 or more)
  • Finance and operations solution architect, per hour (Entry or junior: CAD 125 · Mid: CAD 172 · Senior: CAD 222 or more)
  • Business Central functional base (Entry or junior: CAD 68,000 · Mid: CAD 95,000 · Senior: CAD 128,000 or more)
  • Business Central functional, per hour (Entry or junior: CAD 60 · Mid: CAD 90 · Senior: CAD 125 or more)

Sources: Conspicuous 2026 Canada finance and operations salary guide and Conspicuous 2026 Canada Business Central salary guide. On the finance and operations guide, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal typically add 10 to 20 percent, and T4 employee contract rates are typically 15 to 20 percent lower than incorporated or corp-to-corp rates. The hourly figures are again pay to the person, not a published client invoice.

On the finance and operations Canada notes, base-salary expectations rose 10 to 15 percent year over year for experienced finance and operations professionals, and 8 to 12 percent for experienced Business Central professionals. English and French bilingual candidates command an extra 5 to 10 percent for Quebec and federal-adjacent roles. If your users work in both languages, put that premium in the hiring budget and in the training budget. A unilingual consultant who needs a translator in every workshop will spend your hours on language, not on configuration.

A 10 percent metro premium on the CAD 115,000 mid-level finance and operations base is CAD 11,500, which lands at CAD 126,500. That is still one employee's base. It does not buy the first implementation.

When to use a partner, a freelancer, or an employee

Three staffing patterns show up on live projects, and they fail in different places.

An employee fits steady care after go-live: month-end questions, new items, a report, a user who changed roles. The US senior Business Central functional base starts at USD 125,000, and the senior finance and operations functional base starts at USD 145,000, before metro premium, bonus, and benefits. Hiring that person before anyone has configured the system leaves you paying a salary while the blueprint, the data load, and the training plan still need a team. Our comparison of an ERP consultant vs internal IT team walks through what stays inside the company either way: process decisions, master data ownership, and a manager who can say no to a customization.

A freelancer fits a defined workstream with a start, a finish, and a named output. Examples that match the hourly bands: a fixed chart of accounts mapping, a single integration, a go-live rescue at the premium Customer Engagement range of USD 180 to USD 250 or more an hour, or a senior Business Central functional contractor at USD 140 or more an hour for a known backlog. A freelancer is a weak sole lead for a multi-app program. There is no bench when that person is ill in week eight, and Microsoft's review model assumes a partner methodology running beside Success by Design.

A delivery firm is the path FastTrack and Success by Design describe when the work needs reviews, training evidence, and a methodology beside Microsoft's framework. The commercial models buyers meet on current proposals are fixed fee, time and materials, and managed services after go-live, as a 2026 implementation roundup also lists them. Whichever model you pick, the statement of work still has to name outputs.

We implement Business Central and the wider Dynamics 365 family for companies in this size range. Our ERP implementation practice runs that work in phases: discovery, configuration, data migration, training, and support after go-live. We do not ask you to treat a partner badge as the first filter. The tests are the named people, the hours, the references, the phase plan, and who owns the extensions when the project ends.

Where Flectic fits

Flectic is a delivery firm, which is the third option above, not a freelancer or an employee. It implements Business Central, Dynamics 365 Sales, Field Service and Human Resources for companies of 20 to 100 people in the US and Canada. It also implements Odoo and earns no vendor quota on either platform. It holds no Microsoft certification, which matters if you plan to lean on the Solutions Partner designation and the FastTrack path described below.

Choose Flectic if

  • Phase one is Business Central, Sales or Field Service.
  • You want one named senior consultant from discovery to launch stabilization.
  • You want a phased plan and a fixed price for phase one before any work starts.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your scope is Finance and Supply Chain Management across several countries.
  • You need a Solutions Partner designation or named MB-800 holders on the proposal.
  • You only need contractor hours for a bounded workstream, where a freelancer is the better fit.

The Dynamics 365 implementation service lists the apps we implement and how the phases run.

What Success by Design and FastTrack ask of the firm

Microsoft's implementation guide organizes work with Success by Design. One page lists five stages: Strategize, Initiate, Implement, Prepare, and Operate. A later Success by Design article names five methodology-agnostic phases as Discover, Initiate, Implement, Prepare, and Operate. Ask the bidder which list they use, and where your workshops sit. A proposal that describes agile sprints and never names a phase gate matches a warning buyers already circulate: "If the answer is hand-wavy or describes agile sprints without phase gates, the project will run long." (hiring notes, 2026)

Success by Design does not promise implementation outcomes. Microsoft says it is meant to be used alongside the partner's own methodology. Two reviews are mandatory: the Solution Blueprint Review and the Go-live Readiness Review. Findings are classed as assertions, risks, or issues. You want those findings in writing, with an owner and a date, before you accept a go-live weekend.

FastTrack for Dynamics 365 is a Microsoft customer-success program. Eligible customers get blueprint reviews and go-live readiness reviews, and FastTrack can pull in Microsoft engineering support. Customers who miss eligibility are pointed to self-guided resources. Eligibility requires all of the following:

  1. A minimum annual Dynamics 365 license spend on new deployments of eligible apps. The page describes that minimum and does not print the dollar amount. Ask Microsoft, against your quote, whether you clear it.
  2. Attachment to a Solutions Partner for Business Applications that has at least two eligible customer deployments and has completed Success by Design training before the project starts.
  3. The right deployment record for the apps: customer engagement deployments for Customer Engagement apps, and finance and operations deployments for finance and operations apps.

Eligible apps on that page include Commerce, Customer Insights - Data, Customer Insights - Journeys, Customer Service, Field Service, Finance, Human Resources, Project Operations, Sales, Supply Chain Management, Copilot for Sales, and Copilot for Service, plus built-in agents and Copilot in Dynamics 365. Related Power Platform work counts only if Dynamics 365 is the primary focus. Business Central is not on this eligibility list. A Business Central project can still be well run, and this FastTrack app list does not include it.

Microsoft also says project reviews in the Dynamics 365 Implementation Portal are currently limited to finance and operations apps. If your scope is Business Central or Customer Engagement only, do not assume a portal review will police the plan. Put the blueprint review in the contract yourself.

The Solutions Partner designation is a Microsoft qualification for that FastTrack path. It is worth asking about, after you have the names and the references. It is a poor first filter on its own. A firm can hold a designation and still assign a junior consultant who has never closed your industry's books. Two eligible deployments in the wrong motion (Customer Engagement evidence offered for a Finance program, or the reverse) do not meet the rule as Microsoft wrote it.

What to ask before you sign a statement of work

Buyers name the hard part in plain language: "separating real implementation depth from sales pages is the hard part." You can do most of that separation in two conversations, if you hold the conversation to proof. Ask for the people, then ask for the plan.

People and proof:

  1. Name the consultant who will be on the project at least three days a week, and name the architect who will sign the blueprint. Ask for those people's last two go-lives, with product, industry, company size, and whether they were the lead.
  2. Ask for three implementations in your industry at your size. A 2026 hiring note puts the standard as "Generic case studies don't count." A global manufacturer story does not answer a 40-person distributor's question. (same note)
  3. Ask which deployments they can show: customer engagement, finance and operations, or Business Central. FastTrack cares about the first two. You should care about all three, matched to your app.
  4. Ask whether Success by Design training was completed before kickoff, and who attends the Solution Blueprint Review and the Go-live Readiness Review.

Plan and money:

  1. Ask for phase gates. Map them to Discover or Strategize, Initiate, Implement, Prepare, and Operate, and put a client decision at the end of each gate.
  2. Ask how change management is staffed. The line to test is "User training included is not change management." Training is a workshop calendar. Adoption is who rewrites the job aid, who approves an exception, and who stands in the warehouse on Monday. (hiring note)
  3. Ask what happens after go-live. The exposure is specific: "Firms that disappear after go-live leave you exposed." Name the hypercare weeks, the hours included, the named consultant, and the rate for work beyond that window. (hiring note)
  4. Ask who owns the extensions, the documentation, and the admin credentials. You should be able to take the configuration to another firm.

Walk away from a customization list with no blueprint review, and from a team that cannot name a finance and operations deployment when the scope is Finance or Supply Chain Management. Ask each bidder to price data migration as its own line, with source system, record counts, and a rehearsal load, and to show whether cutover support sits inside the fee.

How fixed fee and time and materials change the bill

Fixed fee, time and materials, and managed services are the commercial models buyers see on current proposals. Each one hides a different risk.

A fixed fee is realistic when the app, the entities, the integrations, and the report list are already written down. It turns sour when the fee was sold against a slide and the workshops discover a second warehouse, catch-weight items, or a custom pricing rule. Require a change-control rule: what counts as inside the fee, what is a change, and who can approve it. A fixed fee without that rule is a time and materials project with a number on the cover.

Time and materials follows the contract bands in this article, then adds the firm's margin. Cap it with a not-to-exceed for phase one and a weekly burn report in hours by named person. Put the invoice rate beside the person-pay benchmark for that seat. A mid-level Business Central functional benchmark of USD 100 an hour is person pay. Any higher number on the invoice is the firm's price for management and risk. You need that invoice rate, the estimated hours, and the cap in the same exhibit.

Managed services belong after go-live, once the backlog is small and repetitive. Buying managed hours to finish an unfinished implementation mixes support with build. Split them. Implementation hours end at a dated hypercare window. Support hours start under a separate rate card.

For any model, reject a single blended rate that covers architect, functional consultant, and developer. The US tables show why. A junior Business Central functional contractor is benchmarked at USD 65 an hour. A senior finance and operations solution architect is benchmarked at USD 210 or more. Blending those seats hides who is booked.

How to staff phase one at a 40-person company

Assume a 40-person US distributor, one legal entity, two warehouses, and Business Central as the only Dynamics app. QuickBooks holds the history. Eight people will enter orders, receive stock, or post invoices. The rest need lighter access. Phase one is finance and inventory. EDI, a second entity, and a customer-portal project wait.

Assume a 10-week build with a mid-level Business Central functional consultant at 20 hours a week and a mid-level Business Central solution architect at 6 hours a week. That is 200 functional hours and 60 architect hours. At the October 2026 contract benchmarks, 200 hours at USD 100 is USD 20,000, and 60 hours at USD 140 is USD 8,400. Combined person-pay benchmark: USD 28,400. If the functional seat is senior, at USD 140 or more, those 200 hours alone are USD 28,000 or more, and the architect hours are extra.

Swap the product and the benchmark moves. The same 200 functional hours at the mid-level finance and operations rate of USD 118 are USD 23,600, before a finance and operations architect at USD 162 an hour. Those totals are person-pay benchmarks. Add the firm's rate when the quote arrives, and add internal time: the controller and the warehouse lead will spend their own hours on mapping, rehearsal, and training.

Our target for a first usable phase is 8 to 12 weeks. The 10-week assumption above sits in that range for a single-entity Business Central scope. A finance and operations scope, or a scope with extensions and several entities, needs more gates before a 10-week plan is credible. We use the Flectic Accelerated Delivery Framework to keep that first phase small enough to review: one blueprint, one data rehearsal, one go-live readiness check, then a dated hypercare window.

Bring the quote, the license list, and the named team to a working session before you sign. The useful outcome is a phase-one scope, a rate that you can compare with the bands on this page, and a review calendar you can hold the team to.

How Flectic can help

If you are staffing a Dynamics 365 project at a company of 20 to 100 people, bring your app list and your phase-one scope to a free 30-minute call with a senior consultant. The question to settle first is whether you need a delivery firm, a freelancer for one workstream, or an employee after go-live.

If it is a delivery firm, see Microsoft Dynamics 365 implementation. The discovery call is free, and Flectic then sends a written proposal with a fixed price for each phase before work starts.

Flectic holds no Microsoft certification and earns no vendor quota on Dynamics 365 or Odoo, so weigh its recommendation on what it puts in writing: the reasons, the trade-offs and the fixed-price scope of phase one.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Dynamics 365 implementation consultant do?

They map your processes onto one Dynamics 365 app, configure or extend it, move data, train users, and stay through go-live. A finance and operations consultant works Finance, Supply Chain Management, Commerce, Human Resources, or Project Operations. A Business Central consultant covers the product Microsoft points smaller teams toward. A Customer Engagement consultant covers sales, service, and field work. One person rarely leads all three well.

How much does a Dynamics 365 implementation cost in 2026?

Published guides price the person, not the project. As of October 2026, US mid-level contract pay is about USD 118 an hour for a finance and operations functional consultant and about USD 100 an hour for a Business Central functional consultant. A partner invoice adds delivery management and margin on top of those bands. Ask each bidder for a phase price that splits configuration, data migration, integrations, training, and support after go-live.

How long does a Dynamics 365 implementation take?

Microsoft organizes the work as strategize or discover, then initiate, implement, prepare, and operate. The guide does not publish a week count. Duration follows the app, the number of legal entities, and whether you need extensions. Ask for phase gates and a go-live readiness review before you accept a date.

What is Microsoft's Success by Design methodology?

Success by Design is Microsoft's review framework for Dynamics 365 implementations. The Solution Blueprint Review and the Go-live Readiness Review are mandatory, and findings are classed as assertions, risks, or issues. Microsoft says the framework sits beside the partner's own method and does not promise a successful outcome. One Microsoft page lists the stages as Strategize, Initiate, Implement, Prepare, and Operate. A later article uses Discover in place of Strategize.

What should I ask about a Solutions Partner designation?

Ask which designation they hold and which deployment type they can show, customer engagement or finance and operations, plus whether Success by Design training was finished before kickoff. FastTrack also asks for two eligible customer deployments and a minimum license spend that Microsoft describes without printing the dollar amount. The designation qualifies a firm for that program. Your decision still rests on named people, references at your size, hours, and the phase plan.

How should change management and user adoption be handled?

Training sessions are one task on the plan. Adoption is who rewrites the job aid, who approves a process exception, and who is on the floor the first week the warehouse uses the new screens. Put those activities in the statement of work with hours, owners, and a hypercare window. A line that only says training is included leaves the adoption work unpriced.

What should post-go-live support include?

Agree the window, the hours, the channel, and the named consultant before go-live. Ask what a later enhancement costs compared with the implementation rate, and whether that person is still assigned to you. Keep implementation hours and later support hours on separate rate cards so unfinished build work is not disguised as a support retainer.

How much does a Dynamics 365 consultant cost per hour in Canada?

Keep the figures in Canadian dollars. As of October 2026, a mid-level finance and operations functional contractor is benchmarked at CAD 125 an hour, and a mid-level Business Central functional contractor at CAD 90 an hour. Senior rates sit higher on both Canadian guides, and on the finance and operations guide, major metros add 10 to 20 percent and bilingual candidates for Quebec or federal-adjacent roles often command an extra 5 to 10 percent. These figures are pay to the person, not a published client invoice.
